Cataloger/Assistant Professor of Library Science  

 

Bethel College invites applications for a Cataloger and Assistant Professor of Library Science.  The incumbent manages the library’s cataloging and metadata system in a SOLINET/OCLC/LibraryWorld environment; provides original cataloging when necessary; and supervises the physical preparation of print materials for library use.   Please direct inquiries to Joseph McDonald, Director of the Library, bethellibdir@gmail.com .

 

Bethel College is a private, liberal-arts college with an annual enrollment of approximately 2000 traditional and non-traditional students.  The college is situated in McKenzie, Tennessee (a town of 5,400); Bethel is halfway between Memphis and Nashville (110 miles from each).  Bethel College is the only college affiliated with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.  Bethel is chartered by the State of Tennessee and accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. 

 

Responsibilities include: creating catalog and metadata records in Dewey using OCLC and contemporary cataloging standards ; maintaining authority control records; managing the library’s catalog and metadata system; manage the LibraryWorld OPAC and collection control system; preparing print materials for library use; training and supervising the library technical services assistant and student workers; preparing management reports; serving on committees and otherwise engage in extra-classroom activities expected of the college’s faculty.

 

Required qualifications include:  Master’s degree in library/ information science or closely related area; working knowledge of  OCLC and AACR2, LCRI, LCC, LCSH, and MARC formats; experience working with library systems, especially LibraryWorld; able to organize and conduct cataloging projects with minimal supervision.

 

Preferred qualifications include:  experience cataloging in an academic library; experience with authority control and catalog management activities; experience with creating and managing non-MARC metadata, an additional graduate degree is welcome.  Recent and suitably prepared graduates are encouraged to apply.
